Wow! It’s no wonder so many detectives suffer marriage breakdowns!

Unfortunately, Sally, it isn’t just detectives who suffer marital breakdowns, no role or rank is free of this risk. From experience, many marriages survive where the couple were married before a spouse joined the police (but not always). Some would think that two police officers marrying would be the ideal solution but this often ends in failure too. The job of being a police officer doesn’t like sharing you with others. Social lives outside of police circles also tend to disappear as non-police friends are unable to understand the pressures and restrictions the job places upon the police officer. For example, they often only get one weekend off a months rather than everyone else’s four. This odd weekend usually ends up being a recuperative time off rather than a fun, action packed opportunity. There are a few officers who can make a marriage and a social life outside the police work, but they are few and far between.

As a teenager I toyed with the idea of joining the police. Glad I didn’t now!

Some leave after a short while in the job. Others stay the whole 30 years and more. Some would do it all over again, some would not. Thank heavens there are folk out there doing the jobs I couldn’t, wouldn’t want to do.
